Frequently Asked Questions: â€‹

Do I need a referral for physical therapy?
An evaluation can be made without a referral but will require a physician’s signed order and plan of care to continue. Most insurances require a physician order first.
Can physical therapy help back pain?

WHAT IS CARDIAC REHABILITATION?

Northeastern Health System Cardiac Rehabilitation:

Our Cardiac Rehabilitation program is designed for patients who have suffered from heart disease, including those who have had a heart attack, chest pain or cardiac surgery such as balloon procedures and stent placement. Patients will benefit from a personalized program with a low patient-to-staff ratio. The program focuses on strengthening the heart muscle and improving cardiovascular fitness to help recover from the effects of heart disease.

Who should take part in cardiac rehab?

It is recommended for patients with:

  • Recent heart attack

  • Stable angina (chest pain)

  • Heart Failure

  • Heart procedures such as stent or angioplasty

Why is this program important?

Patients who enroll in cardiac rehabilitation have more success controlling other cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Our program focuses on the whole patient and equips the patient with the tools and information needed to make healthy changes that are sustainable.

What to expect:

Phase 1 INPATIENT:

Why is this program important?

The purpose of phase 1 is to reduce the effects associated with prolonged bed rest while monitoring cardiac status. Therapy consists of exercise, intermittent sitting, standing and walking.

Phase 2: OUTPATIENT:

Phase 2 typically begins a few weeks after hospital discharge. This phase consists of 1 hour sessions, three times a week for 12 weeks and a weekly education session. There are exceptions to this based on functional performance and insurance benefits.
